Sadiah Ahmed

Job:

Junior Java Developer

Company:

Moneysupermarket Group

I am responsible for developing, testing and maintaining the back-end code of the MSE Cheap Energy Club website. Although this is my primary responsibility, my role has been considerably varied. I have been involved in the design processes, which has involved attending a user testing day and exploring ideas through sketching wireframes. I am also currently developing the website’s user-facing code which means that I am learning VueJs (a new JavaScript framework for building user interfaces).

The most interesting thing I've worked on in my career so far...

The main highlight for me was when one of the features that I had implemented had a direct impact on users. I developed a feature which would allow filters to be added to a URL link sent out to users during a campaign and would filter their results according to the supplied parameters.

What inspired me into digital and tech...

I like problem solving and being creative. A career in tech gives me the opportunity to do both these things in a relaxed working environment. I am learning new things every day and am very well supported within my role. I enjoy collaborating with colleagues and I know that I am making a difference.

My educational background is...

I studied Mathematics with Computing at University and this is where I was first introduced to programming. Later, after a few years of teaching as a Secondary School Mathematics teacher, I came across a training opportunity to develop my technical knowledge and programming skills, so I took the leap and changed careers.

What advice I'd give to girls thinking about a career in digital and tech...

Go in with a growth mindset - It’s okay if you don’t have much technical knowledge right now, this is something that you can develop and get better at. Things are always changing within tech and you’re going to have to constantly adapt to this change. Just do it.
