I started off around 6 years ago in the tech industry in project management before moving onto more technical roles including Data Scientist, Web Developer and Data Engineer. For the last few years I've been working as a Data Platform engineer which means I design, deploy and maintain systems which store, transform and publish data. After uni, I really wanted to get into a career in which I would be able to help people solve problems. While I started out in project management, I found myself gravitating towards more technical problems constantly (how can we do this quicker/better/more efficiently - coding and automation often comes into this!) Later in my career I was inspired by some of the amazing women I worked with in tech, who I could see really had made an impact with their work.
My educational background is...
I completed a BSci in Mathematics at the University of York. I didn't have any programming experience when I started my first job in tech, so a lot of the skills I learnt were on-the-job. However, I do think that the ability to break down problems in order to find a solution was really useful to me when I first learnt coding which is something that comes with studying maths or other sciences.
What advice I'd give to girls thinking about a career in digital and tech...
To those who haven't considered: If you are the kind of person who loves to think about how something (like a process/project/anything!) can be improved, and you love solving problems and providing really valuable outcomes, then it's likely you'd love a career in tech! Now is a really great time to get into the industry - there's so much out there to help people who are starting out, so my advice would be to just give it a go and see how you find it! To those who are just starting out: Don't be afraid of what you don't know! It's really powerful to embrace what you still have yet to learn. The industry is full of programmes and resources to help you out. Keep going!
