REAL ROLE MODEL

Shanaz Hannan
Business Analyst
BAE Systems Applied Intelligence
WHAT DO YOU DO?

My role involves working with people in organisations and project technical teams when a new system or application is being released. I work with the technical teams to deliver what ideally the system or application should do or help the organisation achieve.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU USE MOST IN YOUR JOB?
  • Communication
  • Relationship Building
  • Time Management -
  • Analysis
  • Presentations
WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU'VE WORKED ON IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

Definitely the projects I’ve worked on at BAE that are Cyber Security related. Being from a retail background these projects have exposed me to new types of technology and areas I had no idea existed and in a new age of cyber threats it’s something that is an area that is ever growing.

WHAT'S YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?

I studied Business Systems at university with no interest in a technical career. However in my third year, I chose an IT role. This was my first time exposed to technical projects and I realised my degree was providing me with the correct skills and knowledge to pursue a career.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO DIGITAL & TECH?

I realised that digital and technology has a fast pace of change and if I develop skills in this area I could have a long and varied career. As someone that enjoys learning and doing different types of work it was an ideal match.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN DIGITAL AND TECH?

Keep an open mind, consider what is important to you, and what skills you have naturally. Don’t worry about being a certain type of person or having a specific background because digital and tech is a continuously evolving area that has all types of job roles.
