REAL ROLE MODEL

Reema Kotecha
Cyber Security Senior Consultant
Deloitte LLP
WHAT DO YOU DO?

I work with clients to help them protect their organisations against the rising threat of Cyber attacks. This has ranged from carrying out risk assessments and providing remediation measures, conducting workshops to test a client’s Cyber Incident Response process and implementing Cyber Security education and awareness programmes.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU USE MOST IN YOUR JOB?
  • Project Management
  • Presenting - whether you're presenting in a meeting or leading a client workshop
  • Problem Solving
  • Designing effective Powerpoints
  • Report Writing
WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU'VE WORKED ON IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

I helped put together the service design processes for a new Security Operations Centre (SOC). A SOC is a centralised hub which employs people, processes and technology to monitor, analyse, and protect an organisation from cyber attacks. This was particularly interesting as it was a huge SOC which was going to protect a key part of the UK's public infrastructure, and I got to be a part of creating this!

WHAT'S YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?

At university I studied BSc Economics and Management. I really enjoyed my degree because I liked learning about Economics in more depth, but I also had the chance to take a year out and do a work placement. I would definitely recommend doing this because it gives you the opportunity to develop your soft skills and build your network before you even graduate!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO DIGITAL & TECH?

I’ve seen technology evolve drastically from when I was a very young girl, to now. From dial-up computers to my first Macbook, from Walkmans to Spotify. Because of this, I knew that I wanted to work within the digital & tech industry because I was excited by the thought of working with and contributing towards new and emerging technologies.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN DIGITAL AND TECH?

Don't be put off by thinking that you need to know how to write code or build a server to have a career in digital and tech. I had no technical background whatsoever after I graduated! There are so many careers you can have in the digital and tech industry which do not require a Computer Science background or technical skills, and like mine, there are several career paths in the industry which will provide on-the-job training. You should find what you enjoy the most about the tech industry and look at how your soft skills and transferable skills can help you to build a digital & tech career that you love!
