I am a software developer at AutoTrader in Manchester. I currently work on the backend code on the part of the AutoTrader website that enables individual customers to place adverts.
I am relatively new to coding but so far I am loving my job at AutoTrader. What I find most interesting and rewarding is seeing code that I've worked on in the live system being used by customers and colleagues.
I took a roundabout route to becoming a developer. I have a degree in Modern Languages. After working for a few years and spending some time travelling, I went to Law School and qualified as a solicitor, specialising in Wills, Trusts and Probate. After over 10 years in law and having had my two children, I was ready for a new career direction. Long story short, I did a coding bootcamp, mainly in Javascript, and got a job as a junior developer.
I was attracted by the fact that it is an ever-evolving industry, there is lots to learn and plenty of interesting jobs out there.
Please do consider a career in digital and tech. There are so many interesting, creative roles and a shortage of people to fill them. You don't need to have a technical background for many jobs and for other ones you can do all sorts of training courses to help you develop the skills.
