I am a software engineer which means that I write, test and evaluate the code to create applications that solve problems. Currently, I work on a research project focussed on re-designing the command centre of sub-marines and surface ships using new technologies which I am writing code for.
Whilst working on research projects I have had the opportunity to present my ideas to high-level military professionals and hear their feedback. I also had the opportunity to receive a tour of the Prince of Wales Aircraft Carrier which was incredible, it was like a floating village.
I studied computer science at A-level, I am currently a placement student so I have completed 2 years at university (changing from computer science with maths to computer science as I preferred the practical application) and I am in industry for a year before returning to finish my degree.
I always enjoyed mathematics and creative subjects at school and was looking to find a career that would allow me to explore both. I realised that anything digital requires design to be user-friendly and you have to think logically to solve the problems so it was the perfect balance.
It is everywhere. Technology is involved in pretty much every aspect of life so my advice is figure out what you like to do for fun and work out what digital aspects are involved then you can make a career out of something you find fun and exciting.
