REAL ROLE MODEL

Jennifer Openshaw
Software Engineer
BAE Systems Applied Intelligence
WHAT DO YOU DO?

I am a Software Engineer, which means that I create things, like websites, by writing code.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU USE MOST IN YOUR JOB?
  • Problem solving
  • Technical skills, such as JavaScript (a computer programming language)
  • Team work
  • Communicating with other people
WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU'VE WORKED ON IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

Every day at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence we help our national security and law enforcement clients to prevent and detect crime and help protect people from harm. It is really interesting work!

WHAT'S YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?

I studied arts subjects at school and university - French, English Literature and History. It is only much later that I realised I wanted to work in tech, so I taught myself to code, alongside being a full-time mum, then did a Software Engineering course with Manchester Codes.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO DIGITAL & TECH?

Exciting, interesting and challenging work. Lots of opportunities for career progression, good pay. A welcoming community.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN DIGITAL AND TECH?

Do it! If you think you might be interested in coding, give it a go using one of the many free online courses that are out there, such as freeCodeCamp. If you like puzzles and problem-solving, Software Engineering could be the perfect job for you.
