REAL ROLE MODEL

Emily Oliver
UX & Experimentation Manager
musicMagpie
WHAT DO YOU DO?

I manage the UX and Experimentation team at musicMagpie. We ask customers what they thought about our website and make changes based on what they say. We then run two or three different designs of the website through a test to find a winner, that's now our new web design!

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU USE MOST IN YOUR JOB?
  • Organisation
  • Communication
  • Prioritisation
  • Analytics
  • User research
WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU'VE WORKED ON IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

I worked on a SMARTDrop Kiosk user journey. This is a Kiosk machine that goes in supermarkets and you can drop off your old phone by putting it in the machine to get checked and then you get paid straight away. It’s a perfect way to recycle your old phone!

WHAT'S YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?

I studied Biomedical Science at University but I don’t do really do anything really science-y now I just enjoyed science. I still do research in my job which I learnt at university but mostly I’ve just ended up doing what I do now.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO DIGITAL & TECH?

I love my job because it’s looking at how people use websites and using technology to measure and analyse it. Our team looks into asking customers what they are doing and uses tools to see how many other customers are doing it too. It’s really exciting to find out.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN DIGITAL AND TECH?

Digital and tech is a really exciting area to get involved in, it’s fast developing and it can be really related to all the technology we use every day. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what you want to do right now, just do something you enjoy!
